First homebrew app for Windows Phone 7 brings custom ringtones

Not being able to set your own custom ringtones in Windows Phone 7 is one of the fledgling OS' confusing little design choices. While custom tones are rumored to be part of the January WP7 update, that's just a rumor for the moment -- and you might want to set Heartbreak Armageddon as your ringer right now.

Chris Walshie -- part of the team behind the now-vanished Chevron WP7 unlocker -- has put together a homebrew loader which can package your favorite tunes and sounds as XAP ringtones for your Windows Phone 7 device. Your source files must be in WMA format for the moment, and you'll also need the Windows Phone SDK to get started.
