Motorola Connected Music Player for Android is packed with awesomeness

motorola connected music player android Motorola's new Connected Music Player isn't the first leaked audio app we've seen -- but it's certainly got a leg up on the one we saw from Google. CMP goes way beyond shuffling through your music and video library, building in a ton of (predictably enough) connected features.

Let's start with the radio. CMP includes both SHOUTcast integration and the ability to tap into your phone's FM radio hardware. Soundhound support is also built-in, allowing you to identify unknown tracks anywhere you've got an Internet connection. The video tab will play your locally-stored videos and it's also got a YouTube search option -- though it's limited to finding music videos. The app's Community section leads you to TuneWiki charts, and Twitter and Facebook audio hotness courtesy of Blip.fm. It also features a cool Music Maps option, which lets you see who's listening to what -- either near your location or anywhere else in the world (my neck of the woods is unsurprisingly quiet and showed only me).

From the player's now playing screen you can Blip what you're listening to, add the track to a playlist, delete it from your library, or set it to your ringtone. Want to gently drift off to sleep as you listen to your playlist? No problem, just head to the settings screen and set up the sleep timer.

Egyptian Government Executes Nationwide Internet Blockade

As anti-government protesters take over the streets in Egypt, the country's government has reportedly cut off most Internet and cellphone service. Cairo has labeled its crackdowns on the protests as a response to restore public order. However, critics say Egypt's cutting of communications is an attack on free speech.

Put the Reader link back in Gmail with a Chrome extension

Google made a minor tweak to the Gmail navigation links recently -- moving Photos into a more prominent spot and Reader into the More drop-down. While I wasn't particularly concerned (I've got Firefox hotkeys wired to most of my bookmarks for fast mouse-free access), the change created quite a stir on Twitter.

But as is usually the case, enthusiasts who don't want to accept changes on their favorite Web sites have already responded. If you want your Reader link back and you're using Google Chrome, grab the Put Reader Back extension. Once installed, just reload your Gmail tab to see the change.

Sony Cyber-shot HX100V and HX9V models leaked, superzoomers in large and small sizes

Sony Cyber-shot HX100V and HX9V models leaked, superzoomers in large and small size
Two new additions to the Cyber-shot line have apparently leaked, and while they're perhaps not as titillating as some other consumer electronics the company has managed to let slip ahead of their announcement, we'll bring them to you just the same. First is the HX100V, a 30x zoom (27 - 810mm) compact that borrows some features and styling from the Alpha line. It has a 16.2 megapixel backside-illuminated sensor with BIONZ processing capable of recording 1080p video and, supposedly, has GPS in there somewhere too. Next up is the HX9V, pictured below, a rather more compact compact offering what looks to be the same 16 megapixel sensor but tucked behind a smaller, 16x optical zoom lens. It too is said to do 1080p video but, alas, we don't have any clue about price or availability for either.

CorelDRAW video tutorial: Make a Polaroid-like image in five minutes

CorelDRAW
When most people hear the words "vector graphics", the first thing that comes to mind is Adobe Illustrator. While Illustrator is a wonderful application, it's certainly not the only game in town: I've been using CorelDRAW for several years now, and I just love it.

I'm not a graphics pro by any stretch of the imagination, but I do need to turn out a few pretty pixels here and there for my day job. If you're just thinking about getting into vector graphics, or if you've tried Illustrator and it proved too daunting, CorelDRAW might be just what you need.

Rather than just talk about CorelDRAW or write a tutorial, I figured it would be best to show it off in a short video. I took an image of my awesome cat, Ivan, and made it into a Polaroid-like snapshot. It took me less than five minutes, without any templates or saved settings. To see how I did it, hit Play after the fold.

By the way, this is the first of four CorelDRAW tutorials to be published in the next few weeks. If you'd like to see specific aspects of CorelDRAW in action, feel free to let me know in the comments!

Microsoft readying official Kinect SDK for Windows

Microsoft, according to (you guessed it!) sources familiar with its plans, is preparing to release the official Kinect SDK for Windows. This follows the release of the official Windows drivers last month from Microsoft Kinect's manufacturer, PrimeSense.

The release of an official SDK doesn't have immediate repercussions, but it does strongly hint at a gesture-controlled future for Windows 8. With over 8 million Kinects sold in just 60 days, and with Windows' almost complete penetration of the consumer market, there's a big potential market for Windows software that can utilize Kinect -- and, who knows, by the time Windows 8 rolls around in 2012 or 2013, maybe every household will already have a Kinect just waiting to be plugged in.

If you haven't seen it yet, take a look at the Kinect-powered Minority Reportesque user interface. With this SDK, it could be just a matter of weeks before similar software appears for Windows, in the form of an easy-to-install MSI.

Songbird app for Android goes beta, we go hands-on

Using Songbird on your desktop or laptop to listen to your cavernous collection of digital music? Good news -- the Songbird team has been working in "super seekrit" (their words, not ours) on bringing you a pocket-sized version for your Android device. Even better, they've announced the availability of the first public beta of Songbird for Android -- and we took it for a spin.

Here's the quick version: Songbird looks nice, and it's got a good set of basic features. It's got a good built-in search and allows you to browse your library by artist, album, song, genre, or playlist. As you peruse your collection, the now playing pane hides itself behind Songbird's playback controls. Tap and drag the tab to slide it into view, and you can swipe through a Flickr-powered photostream or like the track on Facebook.

Want to control your Songbird queue from your homescreen? Like all good Android music players, there's a widget which allows you to do just that.
