Top Facebook scams revealed by BitDefender (infographic)

Security company BitDefender -- which recently released the Safego app to protect your Facebook account -- has put together an infographic illustrating information about the state of scams on the social networking site.

At an impressive 7,532 pixels tall, the graphic offers plenty of insight into the dark underbelly of Facebook. The company found profile insight apps -- like those which promise to show you who's viewing your page and who deleted you -- to be the most widespread scam. BitDefender estimates that this particular type of scam has generated more than 1.4 million clickthroughs. Facebook's popular social games are a common trap as well, but are in a distant second, with less than half the clickthroughs.

Somewhat surprisingly, shocking image and video posts came in at number three on the list. We've seen so many of this type of scam appear in our security feeds that we thought they'd be the most common.

Windows 8 now available to OEMs via Microsoft Connect

windows 8Select Microsoft Connect partners -- major players like HP -- have been given their first taste of Windows 8. According to various sources, the build string currently sits at 7971.0.110324-1900, which is the third milestone build of the successor to Windows 7.

So far, there haven't been many details revealed about Windows 8. An actual System Restore -- which is being referred to as History Vault -- has been reported, and the feature will allow users and administrators to completely roll back a system to a previous state. A factory reset option is also said to be included.

We've also seen Windows Live integration taking shape on the desktop. It's believed that you'll be able to log in to Windows 8 using your Windows Live credentials, not just a traditional offline Windows username and password.

All that's left now is for a leaked Windows 8 build to show up on a torrent site. Feel free to tip us if you see that happen.

BlackBerry Touch / Monaco gets manhandled, said to get official in May

Our interest in the BlackBerry Touch (codename Monaco) was piqued when we first caught wind of the device, and we had a feeling it'd be making its way into the wild ever since one showed up in Verizon red around mid-Feburary. Now, BGR has managed to procure an unreleased prototype, and we've gotta say that we like what we're seeing. According to the pub, it should get official at BlackBerry World in May, and it'll run OS 6.1 underneath that 800 x 480-pixel screen. The new BB6 is said to use a BlackBerry ID in place of a PIN for certain key functions -- a necessary move for non-BB platforms rumored to be getting BBM (a historically PIN-based service). BGR also claims it won't be getting the Storm nomenclature, so we apologize in advance to the SurePress fanboys. Either way, we've got an inkling that we'll be hearing more as we get closer to May, but unfortunately our dreams of a super AMOLED-equipped Torch running stock Android with a BBM app will just remain figments of our imagination.

New KDE Polishes Linux but Leaves a Few Little Streaks

Having multiple choices of desktop environments is one of the Linux OS's strong points -- as well as its potential nemesis. This lack of a uniform desktop strategy means confusion for Linux newcomers and frustration for seasoned users. For example, the two most used desktop environments are GNOME and KDE. But the choices do not end there.

Another custom in-dash installation of a Motorola Xoom [from the forums]

xoom-in-car

A couple of weeks back we saw one of our forums members make their own custom Motorola Xoom car dock, and others have been inspired to do the same. Android Central forums user buurin has taken the mount to the next level, putting it on a pivoting mount and connecting it to an amp under the drivers seat, with a volume knob next to the emergency brake. Check it all out in the forums! [Android Central Forums]

HP rolling out webOS 3.0 beta to Early Access developers today

Interested in developing for HP's upcoming TouchPad? Sure you are -- but to play ball, you're going to need access to webOS version 3.0, which the company has announced will be getting delivered as part of the festivities at its webOS Connect event in London today. Of course, you can't just wander in off the street and get access to it: you'll need to be signed up for the Early Access program, which has been dropping early webOS SDK builds on eager devs for some time. Naturally, we'd prefer a real, actual, physical TouchPad to the mere idea of a TouchPad in emulation coming from the soft glow of our laptop displays... but we'll take what we can get while we wait for the June launch.

[Thanks, Michael]

Firefox 4 for Mobile RC released, hints of new badge-collecting social game Firefox Spark

Firefox 4 SparkThe near-final Release Candidate of Firefox 4 for Android and Maemo is now available to download. The final release is expected in the next week or so.

Moving away from the beta builds, this RC is more of a stability and spit-polish release than anything else. Usability-wise, the release notes point out that there are now 150 add-ons that work with Firefox 4 for Mobile, up from 100 last month -- and there's now a Form Assistant, which should make logging into websites a lot easier, especially if you have Firefox Sync enabled.

The most significant change is that the now-infamous checkerboarding from page rendering and scrolling is now a lot less prevalent, thanks to smarter rendering and page loading algorithms. Likewise, JavaScript performance has apparently been improved, but we haven't had a chance to confirm it yet. There's a promotional video from Mozilla that demonstrates Firefox 4 for Mobile after the break.

Finally, the RC contains a link to Firefox Spark, a new badge-collecting website, which seems to be one of Firefox 4 for Android's 'launch goodies.' As far as we know, Firefox Spark will be a social game, where you share the Firefox for Android download link, collect badges, and level up. We're not sure of the exact details yet, though.

Grab Firefox 4 for Android from the Market or download the Maemo version.

IE9 is the most energy-efficient modern browser, according to Microsoft's own testing

Of all the battlefields we've witnessed in the browser wars, this one's never really crossed our minds before: energy efficiency. Yes, the power efficiency of a piece of software, not hardware, is being touted by Microsoft as a differentiating feature for its fresh new Internet Explorer 9. It's thrown together the top five most popular browsers and put them through a cycle of benchmarks -- including Microsoft's own FishIE Tank graphics acceleration test, but not the somewhat popular Adobe Flash -- while measuring how much power they use beyond what the underlying Windows 7 system needs to keep itself going. Shockingly, IE9 was the winner each and every time and there's a tenuous conclusion drawn that if you want good battery life, you'll be going with Internet Explorer. Oh well, whether you consider them a good laugh or really valuable buyer's advice, there's plenty more of these power consumption comparisons at the source link below.

Novatel's USB551L 4G LTE modem hits Verizon March 31st

Samsung's new LTE mobile hotspot may have managed to sneak out a bit early, but it looks like those opting for Novatel's USB551L LTE modem instead will still have to wait a few days. Verizon has just confirmed today that the modem will be available on March 31st for $99.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate (on a two-year contract). As expected, the modem packs both Windows and Mac support out of the box, and promises download speeds up to 12 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 5 Mbps. Still no word on Novatel's 4510L MiFi, though we presume it will be following shortly. Full press release is after the break.

The Best Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

Remember that movie with James Franco? The one where he's trapped under the boulder or something, and he has to saw his own arm off? I think it won an Oscar? I forget, I never saw it. I did, however, see Blue Valentine, and it almost made me cry. It was really good though! But anyway, imagine, for a moment, if that James Franco movie had been about a big laptop instead of a boulder or whatever. Trapped under a massive, leaden laptop from the late 90s. Awful plastic hinges, giant ports! A laptop leviathan. This scenario isn't that far-fetched. It could happen to you. At work. Or at home. Right now. You could find yourself pinned under your laptop. Trapped. Desperate. Ready to saw off your own limb. Or, if you bought this new 11-inch MacBook Air (with free shipping!), you'd be able to lift the thing off of you with ease and then frisbee it out of your nearest window. Show that computer who's boss! Now you're as handsome and famous as James Franco. -SB More »
